NetChess server
NetChess, a networked multiplayer chess game, is now pretty much finished. There may still be a few glitches, but it generally seems to work well.
If someone could setup a permanent server (Samee had a temporary one for a week last year) we could run that and even connect to it over the web to challenge other players who are online.

Re: NetChess server
Good call (although I'm not the one to setup a server).

Re: NetChess server
NetChess has an offline portion that allows one to view recorded games.
However, if made by hand they have to be made in a specific format.
So an example game would be:
Castling is just O-O and O-O-O.
NetChess can also save played games in that format...but until we have a server up you won't be able to play others very easily
However, it does allow you to see visually what's happening. I'll also try to make a converter so standard notation can be read by the program.

- Code:
1 or 0
# of moves
move1 comment1
move2 comment2
etc.

0
3
e2-e4 white king pawn
e7-e5 black king pawn
g1-f3 attack black king pawn

Re: NetChess server
How can we help you build a server?

Re: NetChess server
I just need a place to host it - somewhere that can run an executable jar file and allow computers to connect over the IP.
Re: NetChess server
can you host it on the net? That way we can have a server that is open to everyone. That would be pretty cool.

Re: NetChess server
Actually, anyone should be able to run it from their home computer, as long as they set their modem/router to allow other computers to connect to the server. (I can't because my dad is worried about security).
FYI, it uses ports 4000 and 4001.

LMAO...security.
Michael, can't you find a loophole? Im almost certain there is one.

Re: NetChess server
Well, considering my dad controls the router, and I can't even access it unless I use his computer...not really xDHo Chi Minh wrote:Michael, can't you find a loophole? Im almost certain there is one.
Re: NetChess server
hacked, hackĀ·ing, hacks
2. To gain access to (a computer file or network) illegally or without authorization: hacked the firm's personnel database.
I don't know any hacks. Don't get ideas of how to hack from me but i can tell you one thing. You probably know this already but computers that share a router are usually on the same network. Use remote access. LOL i don't hack my dad's desktop, again, don't get ideas.
I am pretty sure there are more than one loopholes and alternatives rather than just hacking. You should try reasoning. Tell him to add router exception perhaps?
